Why I still have fibrosis after lipo treatment

Fibrosis is the formation of firm scar tissue beneath the skin. During liposuction, small cannulas move under the skin to remove fat. Even when performed perfectly, this process temporarily disrupts:
connective tissue
lymphatic vessels
small blood vessels
As your body heals, it produces collagen and scar tissue to repair the treated areas. Sometimes this healing response becomes excessive, creating thick or hardened tissue that you can feel as lumps or firmness. This typically appears between weeks 3 and 8 after surgery, when swelling begins to decrease.

Fibrosis after liposuction occurs because the body is actively repairing tissue that was disrupted during surgery. The healing process naturally creates inflammation, which helps the body remove damaged cells and begin rebuilding tissue. However, if inflammation lasts too long, the tissue can become firm or hardened. At the same time, the lymphatic system may temporarily slow down, allowing fluid to accumulate in the treated areas. This trapped fluid increases swelling and can contribute to the formation of fibrous tissue. During healing, the body also produces collagen, which is essential for repair, but sometimes too much collagen forms, creating thicker scar tissue that feels uneven or lumpy. Finally, if the tissue is not gently stimulated during recovery, the collagen fibers may bind together and form dense bands under the skin, leading to the firmness commonly known as fibrosis.

When Should You Start Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Most patients can begin MLD within 3 –7 days after surgery, depending on their surgeon’s recommendation. Starting early is important because the first few weeks are when swelling and fluid buildup are most active. Early treatment may help reduce the chance of fibrosis developing.
Always follow the timeline recommended by your surgeon.
How Many Sessions Are Usually Needed?
Recovery varies for each patient, but many post-surgical care specialists recommend:
2–3 sessions per week during the first few weeks
A total of 6–12 sessions during recovery
Some patients benefit from additional treatments if fibrosis has already developed.
The goal is to support your body’s healing while swelling and scar tissue are still forming.
Signs That Massage May Help
You may benefit from lymphatic drainage if you notice:
hard areas under the skin
small lumps or nodules
tightness in treated areas
prolonged swelling
uneven texture
These symptoms are common and often improve with proper post-operative care.
Supporting Your Recovery
In addition to lymphatic drainage massage, the following can support healing:
wearing compression garments as recommended
staying hydrated
gentle walking to encourage circulation
following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions
Together, these steps can help your body heal more efficiently and reduce the risk of complications.
